Alta Lakes Camp; Telluride, CO

Driving to Telluride, CO

Upon arriving in Telluride we decided to head for the campsite we had scoped out first in case the campground was full and we would need to come up with an alternate.  After turning off the main road it was a 3.8 mile climb up a very steep, rocky, rutted, and at times extremely narrow mountain road.  It was a very slow climb.  These were some old mining ruins we passed on our way up the mountain to our camp

When we finally arrived our camp was at 11,168 feet MSL, the highest we have been on this trip so far.

Uh-oh!  That climb might have killed our transmission.

This wasn't such a bad place to be stranded though.  We let the van cool down for a bit while we walked around the lake.

Ultimately, George concluded that we had not blown our transmission.  Rather it had become so over heated it started spewing the transmission fluid out, the altitude could have helped that along as well since all of our bottled were bloated from having climbed so high.  The next morning we carefully made our way down the mountain and headed towards Telluride.

After arriving the Telluride we stopped at an ACE Hardware and picked up some transmission fluid then walked around the town a bit.
