Oil!

We took the ferry back to Galveston and visited the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum.  The museum is housed in a decommissioned jack-up drilling rig that was in service from 1969 through 1984, the "Ocean Star." It contained a fair amount of propaganda for the oil companies, but being on a decommissioned Drill Rig was novel and informative. We decided to take the tour as likely no where else will we have the opportunity to visit an oil rig and learn about offshore drilling.

These are some of the drill bits used to drill oil wells into the ocean floor.

Living quarters for workers of the oil rig... their top bunk is a little more spacious than our van!

Obviously quite a bit of science and sophisticated machinery goes into the discovery and extraction of offshore oil.

Overall the museum was interesting and we spent several hours there.  When we were through we ate some lunch and continued northwest to Houston.
